Breslin's second novel (after the controversial For Such a Time) is a timeless love story set during World War I. Grace Mabry attends a masquerade ball dressed as Pandora to give white feathers symbolizing cowardice to those who object to fighting in the war. When she hands one to Jack Benningham there is an immediate romantic spark. Jack, working undercover as a conscientious objector to catch German spies, is pleased that his cover is working, but from that point forward, Grace will haunt, taunt, and follow him, bringing all the bad luck of her namesake. Until both learn to trust God's path for them, they will never find love together. It's a bumpy ride ahead. VERDICT Breslin has done her research, unfolding her story with impeccable attention to historical detail. Adding to the novel's pleasures are a lush rural English setting, absorbing protagonists, and a moving, suspenseful plot. The emotional and spiritual growth of Grace and Jack as they struggle with threat and betrayal makes for an engrossing read for fans of historical romantic suspense.
