Award-winning author Denny S. Bryce and USA Today bestselling author Eliza Knight collaborate on a brilliant novel that uncovers the boundary-breaking, genuine friendship between Ella Fitzgerald, the Queen of Jazz, and iconic movie star Marilyn Monroe.

One woman was recognized as the premiere singer of her era with perfect pitch and tireless ambition.

One woman was the most glamorous star in Hollywood, a sex symbol who took the world by storm.

And their friendship was fast and firm...

1952: Ella Fitzgerald is a renowned jazz singer whose only roadblock to longevity is society's attitude toward women and race. Marilyn Monroe's star is rising despite ongoing battles with movie studio bigwigs and boyfriends. When she needs help with her singing, she wants only the best—and the best is the brilliant Ella Fitzgerald. But Ella isn't a singing teacher and declines—then the two women meet, and to everyone's surprise but their own, they become fast friends.

On the surface, what could they have in common? Yet each was underestimated by the men in their lives—husbands, managers, hangers-on. And both were determined to gain. Each fought for professional independence and personal agency in a time when women were expected to surrender control to those same men.

This novel reveals and celebrates their surprising bond over a decade and serves as a poignant reminder of how true friendship can cross differences to bolster and sustain us through haunting heartbreak and wild success.

Narrators Karen Chilton and Caroline Hewitt combine their considerable vocal talent to portray two legendary entertainers in this audiobook set primarily in the 1950s. There are no words to express how compelling Chilton's performance is as Ella Fitzgerald, "the Queen of Jazz." Chilton mesmerizes listeners as she imbues Fitzgerald with subtle emotion, poise, and practicality. Listeners will be so convinced they're hearing Fitzgerald that they'll long for Chilton to break into song. Hewitt is no less dazzling as screen icon Marilyn Monroe. Hewitt brings layers of wit, savvy, and emotional fragility to her depiction of Monroe's familiar story. The audiobook begins as Monroe writes letters to Fitzgerald and they become pen pals, and then good friends. The spirit of the times surrounds their friendship as each navigates family, romance, and career. M.J. Winner of AudioFile Earphones Award © AudioFile 2024, Portland, Maine

Knight (The Mayfair Bookshop) and Bryce (The Other Princess) team up to present a meticulously researched portrait of the friendship between Ella Fitzgerald and Marilyn Monroe. Though one might assume that these two women had little in common, the authors lovingly describe their many connections and the support they gave each other as each navigated unhealthy relationships, the stress of constantly being in the spotlight, and the unfair treatment of women and people of color. Narrator Karen Chilton animates Fitzgerald's first-person POV, capturing listeners' attention with her rich, melodious timbre. Chilton's performance creates a wonderful sense of intimacy with her nuanced yet always elegant tone. Monroe's story is presented in the third person, a choice that could have created distance and reserve. Caroline Hewitt's deft narration ensures the opposite, however, as her narration of Monroe's side of the relationship rings with empathy and compassion. Additionally, the breathiness that she employs when speaking in Monroe's voice realistically fleshes out her scenes. The authors' note at the novel's end provides information about their sources and research methods. VERDICT This novel should delight fans of Fitzgerald and Monroe and those seeking biographical fiction about women determined to create their own paths.--David Faucheux
