A young woman pursues a dangerous quest in late-1800s Egypt in this sequel toWhat the River Knows (2023). After Inez Olivera was nearly murdered while assisting with her uncle's archaeological expedition in Egypt, T�o Ricardo is eager to ship her home to safety in Argentina. But Inez burns with the need to stay and make sure that those who committed crimes against her family are held responsible. Unfortunately, the law precludes Inez, as a young unmarried woman, from accessing her inheritance (needed to fund her quest for justice) without her guardian uncle's permission. Whitford Hayes, a former British soldier and her t�o's aide-de-camp, proposes marriage, which could solve her problems. But can Inez trust the secretive Whit? More danger and intrigue lurk at every turn in this exciting duology closer, which fully addresses the first entry's jaw-dropping cliffhanger. The well-paced plot encompasses many fresh, new adventures and betrayals in this reimagined historical setting in which ancient magic abounds and not everyone or everything is what it seems. Even more captivating, however, is the complicated, nuanced love story between Whit and Inez. Their chemistry sizzles, but their relationship is achingly layered with both profound loyalty and deep deception. As their journey unearths new enemies and priceless archaeological finds, the duo must try to trust each other enough to survive. A thrilling, beautifully written page-turner. Gr 9 Up-After the heart-stopping end of What the River Knows, Inez's uncle has put an end to her search for answers and is determined to ship her back to safety in Argentina. As an unmarried woman in 1885 Egypt, her only recourse against her guardian is the enigmatic Whitford Hayes and his seemingly impulsive marriage proposal to secure her inheritance and independence. No matter how much Inez wants to say yes, she struggles to trust herself with a decision this serious after the events of the previous book. Whit has secrets of his own that make it difficult for Inez to trust him, no matter how close they've grown in their rivals-to-lovers romance. Inez's determination to get justice for what's happened to her family pulls readers along into further danger and betrayals as Iba�ez's clever, sensual writing paints a vivid picture of a world where old magic can be found in unexpected places. Clearly articulated characters create a diverse and engaging cast full of layers and personal motives, while emotional resonance propels the story and their arcs forward. Whit and Inez's searing romance is tied tightly to the adventure, as they must rely on the trust they've built while knowing the betrayals yet to come. Iba�ez's historical duology is perfect for readers seeking magnetic romance and gripping adventure. VERDICT A singular historical romance destined for all YA collections.
