Under attack from an enemy, two werewolves save each other, share a passionate night together, and then must deal with the consequences before they can find happiness together. After vampires attack Grey Wolf high commander Colt Cavanaugh, he stumbles across Belle Beaumont, who'd been a prisoner of his pack but escaped. Luckily she's a physician who can treat the potentially deadly injury he sustains. Their obvious sexual chemistry leads to a one-night stand, and he promises to free her after she tells his pack leader the troubling information she overheard when she was hiding during the fight: The vampires are developing a way to feed off shape-shifters and control them. When the vampires attack again, Colt sends Belle away to keep her safe, but he's captured and tortured. Weeks later, Colt has been rescued, and Belle returns to the Grey Wolf compound to let him know she's safe but pregnant, then gets caught up in the pack's camaraderie, which reminds her of her own loneliness as a clanless wolf. Secrets on both sides keep them apart, however, until danger rises again. Ballenger continues her Seven Range Shifters series, and there's a lot going on. Lots of enemies, lots of secrets, lots of suspicion. The romance is sexy, and a fast-paced, rollicking plot will keep readers engaged, though too many head-scratching details get in the way: the shape-shifting community's lack of trust for one of its highest ranking warriors; Colt's not realizing his deep-seated secrets aren't secret at all; none of his friends sharing that fact with him; and more. An ambitious paranormal romance that generally succeeds on the big picture but misses in the details.

Dr. Elizabeth Belle Beaumont was desperate to escape her past. High Commander Colt Cavanaugh was desperate to keep his past a secret. When the two are thrown together in the midst of war between the shifters and the vampires, all bets are off. Belle manages to get free from the rival wolf pack that kidnapped her and lands right at her very handsome, very sexy enemy's feet. Caught in the line of fire, Colt is wounded, forcing the two of them to hole up deep in the Montana wilderness until Belle helps Cole heal enough for them to face their packs and their pasts. Colt is used to fighting turf battles, not battles for his heart, but he will put it all on the line for Belle. Together they will put their old wounds to rest and face the future. With action, tension, and heat, this second entry, following Cowboy Wolf Trouble (2019), in Ballenger's Seven Range Shifters series hits all the sweet spots of paranormal romance.
