A debut sexy romantic comedy about a woman getting her groove back and getting a second chance at love.

Vanessa Jared, a 40-something divorcee, decided that the best way to pull herself out of their post-divorce slump was to form The Savvy, Sexy, Singles Club and start the "Do Me" portion of her and her friends' lives.

But on the two year anniversary, a sexy sheriff shows up on Vanessa's doorstep wanting her to help him keep his little sister from marrying her no-good ex. Vanessa is not down for this at all. She wants nothing to do with her ex...until she spots a photo of her ex's new fiancee wearing her grandmother's ring—which he clearly stole from her. So now it is on. Vanessa is ready to take this trifling (fill-in-the-blank) down. What she does not expect is to fall in love along the way.

LaQuette (the Devereaux Inc. series) centers this cookie cutter small-town rom-com on a pair of 40-something protagonists both recovering from derailed early adulthoods filled with grief and regret. Two years post-divorce, Vanessa Jared celebrates her freedom from a toxic marriage with the friends who helped her along the way: the Savvy, Sexy, and Single Club. But her past comes back to haunt her when Monroe Hills, Pa., Sheriff Michael Park requests her help to convince his 25-year-old sister not to marry Vanessa’s ex-husband, Karl. Vanessa’s reluctant to get involved, but she agrees when she sees a photo of the engaged pair and recognizes her grandmother’s stolen engagement ring on the bride-to-be’s finger. With years of therapy under her belt and the support of the Savvy, Sexy, and Single Club, Vanessa is more than ready to face Karl—but she’s unprepared to wind up stuck in Monroe Hills and unexpectedly falling in love with Michael. The mature, strong-willed main characters’ steamy romance generates some genuine heat, but the rushed plotline is predictable and LaQuette leaves little room to develop her cast, making the secondary characters blend together. This is best suited for the author’s diehard fans.

Two years after escaping a horrible marriage with a controlling man, Vanessa Jared is still at loose ends. She was able to find dedicated friends at a divorce support group, and together they formed the Savvy, Sexy, Singles Club. Even with the support of her friends, however, Vanessa hasn't been able to move on. Then an unexpected knock at the door sets her on a new adventure. Michael Park's sister is engaged to Vanessa's ex-husband, and Michael wants Vanessa to visit his small town and talk his sister out of going through with the marriage. Vanessa reluctantly agrees, and before she knows it, her overnight stay is extended, and a classic sexy romance ensues. Unfortunately, the audiobook of LaQuette's (One Night Expectations; Backstage Benefits) latest novel suffers from occasional technical errors, including the mispronunciation of Korean words. Narrator Denise Wallace brings the heat, but she doesn't consistently distinguish between characters. VERDICT Despite minor issues with the audiobook, this interracial romance (Vanessa is Black, and Michael is Korean American) satisfies. A good purchase for libraries with patrons who love fun and steamy contemporary romances.--Christa Van Herreweghe
