Small plates, appetizers, and party fare are often lost among the early chapters of larger cookbooks in which primacy is placed on entrees instead. In this excellent work, journalist and brewery owner DeBenedetti and cookbook author Slonecker (Pretzel Making at Home) put the spotlight on these little bites. Better still, they capitalize on the increasing trend in American cuisine for an appreciation of the broad array of beers now available to suggest pairings according to flavor profiles (e.g., sour, smoky, hoppy, and more). Recipes range from twists on classics and standbys (day glo deviled eggs; tamarind and fish sauce-glazed chicken wings) to unconventional treats (split pea fritters, fried pickled vegetables). There are even a few sweet dishes to be found. Color photography adds to the appeal. Even nonbeer drinkers will find terrific ideas within these pages. VERDICT This superb collection features of recipes that are sure to be hits at any gathering. Highly recommended for all cooking collections.--Peter Hepburn, Coll. of the Canyons Lib., Santa Clarita, CA
